Definition: IBM Z
IBM's family of 64-bit mainframes, introduced in 2000 as the zSeries. IBM mainframes sell from $75 thousand to $10 million. They are robust, mission critical computer systems that support hundreds and thousands of users at terminals and desktop computers. Z machines run under z/OS and Linux.

In 2000, the Z architecture was a major upgrade to previous ESA/390 mainframes. The "Z" reflects "zero" downtime because these machines have built-in redundancy for major components.
