Pronounced "archive" because the X is the Greek letter "chi," arXiv is a repository of more than two million scholarly articles in many fields, including physics, mathematics, computer science and electrical engineering. Introduced in 1991 by Paul Ginsparg, arXiv receives more than 20,000 submissions every month, many of which are published for peer review.
Originally the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) physics archive, the content was tranferred to Cornell University in 2001. On July 1, 2026, the arXiv becomes an independent nonprofit corporation. See
